Nurturing Approach

At St Mark and All Saints, we follow a Whole School Nurturing Approach, which means we place wellbeing, relationships, and emotional development at the heart of everything we do. This approach helps create safe, supportive environments where all children feel valued, respected, and ready to learn. By promoting positive relationships, consistency, and understanding, we aim to meet the social, emotional, and learning needs of every pupil, helping them to thrive both in and out of the classroom.
What are The Six Principles of Nurture?
The Six Principles of Nurture provide a framework for supporting the emotional and social development of children. These principles guide our interactions, environment, and teaching to ensure all pupils feel safe, valued, and ready to learn.
1. Children’s learning is understood developmentally
Every child learns and develops at their own pace. We meet children where they are, not where we think they should be, and provide support appropriate to their individual stage of development.
2. The classroom offers a safe base
A calm, predictable, and structured environment helps children feel secure. Our classrooms are safe spaces where children know what to expect and feel confident to take risks in their learning.
3. The importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing
Nurture – showing care, understanding, and empathy – builds trust and supports children’s emotional wellbeing. We prioritise positive relationships to help children feel valued and supported.
4. Language is a vital means of communication
We model and encourage the use of language to express thoughts and feelings. Talking is key to learning and emotional development, and we create plenty of opportunities for meaningful conversations.
5. All behaviour is communication
We view behaviour as a way children communicate their needs or emotions. Instead of punishment, we respond with curiosity and support to understand the message behind the behaviour.
6. The importance of transitions in children’s lives
Changes and transitions, big or small, can be challenging. We support children through these times with care and consistency to help them manage and adapt confidently.
Assessment of Need
The Boxall Profile is a valuable assessment tool that helps to identify the social, emotional, and behavioural needs of our pupils. It allows us to gain a deeper understanding of each child’s developmental strengths and areas where support may be needed. The insights provided by the Boxall Profile help us tailor our nurturing approaches, interventions, and support strategies to ensure every child is able to thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.
